At the May 20th meeting, Michael Greis, Chair of the Youth Programs Committee, presented the inaugural Community Service Awards to four Needham High School students in recognition of their commitment to Community Service.

Each year, the students recognized for their community service will also be invited to submit a short proposal to the Exchange Club for a cash donation to the organization they work with. The Exchange Club will select one or two organizations for a donation from among the proposals submitted by the students.

Ariana Chae - Take Back the Night

This organization spreads awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault in connection with the Domestic Violence Action Committee. Ariana has been on the organizing committee since her freshman year, and in the coming year will serve as Chief Organizer for the Committee’s fundraising and awareness activities. The Club has held three successful annual events since 2007.

Joining Ariana was Deb Jacob, liaison from the Needham Domestic Violence Action Committee.

Remy Marin - RADD

Remy is a founding member and secretary of this organization, the mission of which is to promote responsibility and good decision-making among peers as well as to educate students about the repercussions of their actions. In addition to running the RADD Facebook page, Remy and her committee provide fun and safe activities for teens including “Wii Game Night” and a soon-to-be-monthly Coffeehouse at the Congregational Church.

Joining Remy for the presentation was her father, Craig Marin.

Alex Sherry - Relay for Life

“We’re all familiar with the Relay for Life of Needham, Dedham and Wellesley,” said Youth Committee Chair Michael Greis. “A few years ago . . . Club and District Youth of the Year, Nick Simmons-Stern, was recognized for his role in making Needham's Relay for Life one of the most successful in the region. Alex has served as a member of the Relay’s planning committee for three years and has also served as logistics chair. As a member of the 2008 “Friends Fighting Cancer” team, Alex and his team were the top fundraising team in the history of the local relay.

Joining Alex for the presentation was his mother, Sabra Sherry.

Alison Smith - Best Buddies

Alison’s Best Buddies program creates opportunities for one-on-one relationships with peers who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Peer buddies communicate on a weekly basis and meet twice a month. Alison will be attending the Best Buddies National Leadership meeting in Indiana in July and will serve as chapter Vice President this fall. Alison was involved in this program at Pollard and brought this experience to the high school level.

Joining Alison for the presentation was her mother, Susan Smith.

Organizational Donations

At the May 20th meeting, Youth Committee Chair Michael Greis also announced that two organizations would each be receiving $750 donations from the Exchange Club to support their work and that of the students who volunteer with them:
  • Take Back the Night - the Exchange Club's donation will provide needed support for this November's event
  • Rockets Against Destructive Decisions- the Exchange Club's donations will expand the number of events RADD is able to sponsor for Needham's youth
On June 23rd, Club President Jerry Wasserman presented the check for $1,500 to be shared by the two organizations to Needham High School President Jonathan Pizzi and Director of Guidance Tom Denton.

Ariana and Remy will be invited to the Exchange Club meeting when the 2011Community Service Award winners are announced. They will be able to share their experiences with Exchange Club members and next year's winners.
